How to get a horse

STEVE: The best way to first get a horse is to contact your trainer, and they usually have a number of different avenues to go ahead and source horses in the particular discipline that you’re going to be using your horse for.

If it’s a stock horse, cutting horse, roping horse, reining horse, they tend to have a lot of avenues, and know people that sell them — or at least they have contacts to where they can have a number of different horses that you can try.

ALEX: There are also other avenues: classified ads or websites that you can search for horses that are for sale. But obviously you have to be careful knowing who the seller is and knowing the history of the horse that you’re purchasing — that he hasn’t had any serious injuries or training compromises along the way that would make him an unsuitable horse.
